Your CIS-DF Deadline Is Closer Than December 31

Seven ServiceNow CIS certifications expire on December 31, 2026 unless you pass CIS-DF first. The registration fine print means your real deadline is October. Here is the math.

If you hold any of seven ServiceNow CIS certifications, you have a deadline this year. Most people reading the announcement assume they have until December 31, 2026. In practice, waiting that long can cost you your certification even if you follow every rule.

Here is what ServiceNow's policy actually says, and the timeline that follows from it.

What changed

ServiceNow made Certified Implementation Specialist - Data Foundations (CMDB and CSDM), known as CIS-DF, a prerequisite for seven implementation specialist certifications:

  • CIS-Discovery (DISCO)
  • CIS-Hardware Asset Management (HAM)
  • CIS-IT Service Management (ITSM)
  • CIS-Service Mapping (SM)
  • CIS-Security Incident Response (SIR)
  • CIS-Software Asset Management (SAM)
  • CIS-Vulnerability Response (VR)
  • New candidates must pass CIS-DF before they can register for any of these exams. That part is simple.

The part that affects working professionals is retroactive. If you already hold one of the seven, you must pass CIS-DF by December 31, 2026. Miss the deadline and your existing certification expires. Getting it back means passing both CIS-DF and the original exam again.

The free exam, and the fine print

ServiceNow is offering CIS-DF at no cost to current holders of the seven affected certifications. Register on or before December 31, 2026 and your first attempt is free. After registering, you have 90 days to schedule and complete the exam.

Read those two rules together and a trap appears.

The 90-day window can carry your exam date into 2027. The deadline does not move with it. ServiceNow's own guidance is explicit that certifications expire on December 31 even for candidates who already have a CIS-DF exam scheduled in 2027.

So a free registration in late December, with a test date in February, still ends with an expired certification. The registration deadline and the pass deadline are the same date. Only the second one protects you.

    The retake math

The free offer covers first attempts only, and ServiceNow's retake policy requires a waiting period between attempts plus payment of the exam fee for each retake.

Now picture a first attempt in mid-December that doesn't go your way. Your certification depends on scheduling, sitting, and passing a paid retake inside two weeks, over the holidays, in whatever proctoring slots remain. That is not a plan. That is a coin flip with your credential on the table.

The exam itself deserves respect. It runs 75 questions in 90 minutes, mixing multiple choice with multiple select, drag-and-drop matching, and scenario questions. Governance alone carries 35 percent of the exam, followed by Insight at 20, Ingestion at 19, Configuration at 15, and CSDM Fundamentals at 11. ServiceNow doesn't publish the cut score. Study guides put it in the neighborhood of 70 percent, but treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee.

    The realistic timeline

Work backward from December 31. A safe plan leaves room for one full retake cycle, which puts your first attempt in October or early November. Preparation sits in front of that. ServiceNow recommends its CMDB and CSDM fundamentals courses and lists two or more years of CMDB experience among the recommended background, so give yourself honest study time rather than a cram week. Registration starts a 90-day clock, so register when you are a month or two from ready, not on the last day the offer exists.

Treat October as your working deadline. December 31 is the date your certification expires, and expiry dates make bad planning dates.

    If your situation is different

Completed the training and bought a voucher, but haven't tested yet? Your voucher stays valid and won't expire, but you can't use it to schedule that downstream exam until you've passed CIS-DF first.

Starting fresh on an ITAM, ITOM, ITSM, or SecOps path? CIS-DF now comes first, permanently. Course completion is recommended but no longer required before registering for an exam.

    The bottom line

Check your certification status this week. If one of the seven is on your profile, register while the free offer applies, schedule with room to study properly, and leave space for a second attempt you hopefully never need. The professionals who treat this as an October problem will keep their credentials. Some of the ones who treat it as a December problem won't.
